2024 Konnichiwa! Taste of Japan Sweepstakes Grand Prize Winner
Last year, Garth Lemke became the lucky winner of our Taste of Japan Sweepstakes, proving that just a few seconds could lead to the adventure of a lifetime.
I was booking a hotel room at my favorite downtown Edmonton Coast-APA hotel for a concert when I noticed the contest pop-up on the website,” Garth shared. It took me just seconds to enter with my email, and a month later, I got the call—I had won a trip for two to Tokyo!”
Riding the bullet train was a highlight,” Garth said. “At first, we were nervous about navigating the system, but it quickly became part of the adventure. If we ever looked remotely confused at any time, staff or just regular Japanese folks, came out of nowhere to assist us.
Tokyo itself offered unforgettable experiences, from the vibrant streets of Shibuya to the serene beauty of Senso-ji Temple. Their first sushi meal at the Tokyo fish market culinary school left a lasting impression. “The chefs there train there for seven years to be a sushi chef, Garth explained.
In Sapporo, Marianne fulfilled a lifelong dream of visiting the 1972 Olympic sites that she remembers watching in her own childhood. “The Olympic museum brought back many fond memories and looking down from the top of the ski jump gave a unique perspective of the moments leading up to being airborne, Garth said.
The journey wasn’t just about destinations but also about the warm hospitality they received along the way. The APA Hotels staff made us feel welcome at every stop, Garth shared. “Each hotel was clean, conveniently located near train stations, and staffed by people who went out of their way to help us—even if we didn’t speak the same language.
In Tokyo, we were greeted with a personal letter from the APA President, wishing us well after hearing about wildfires in Jasper. That small gesture meant so much to us.
Other memorable moments included tasting the sweetest apples in Aomori, exploring the historic streets of Hakodate, and wandering through artisan shops in Kyoto. “Some of our favorite experiences happened when we had no set plans—just walking through neighborhoods, finding hidden gems along the way,” Garth added.
