Canmore is a dog’s dream. Between trails through the mountains, pathways through town, expansive off-leash areas, pet-friendly markets and even patios for slightly less frigid days, the bustling community is truly one of Western Canada’s top pet-friendly travel destinations.
Here’s a sampling of pet-friendly activities near the Coast Canmore Hotel & Conference Centre.
- Off-Leash Areas
Every dog loves to get off their leash and run to their heart’s content. While Canmore requires that dogs be kept on a leash when wandering around the town centre or on one of its many beautiful paths, there are five off-leash areas in town perfect for getting your pup the exercise they need.
- Quarry Lake Dog Park

What to know: This park has two huge off-leash areas, with a gorgeous meadow where dogs can run and a second section that backs onto a pond, which is particularly pretty in winter.
- Cougar Creek

What to know: This fenced dog park meanders through a thick forest, with intersecting pathways and a huge amount of space for your dog to run. It’s a quick 20-minute walk from our hotel.

- Hubman Dog Park
Distance from Coast Canmore Hotel & Conference Centre: 5.8 kilometres
What to know: A small community dog park that’s near a disc golf course and an extensive network of paved trails. It’s the farthest on this list but a great choice for a day out.
Walking Trails
Canmore is the type of town where people don’t let a little cool weather keep them inside. The surrounding area has hundreds of fun hikes, although visitors should research conditions and whether winter equipment is needed before heading out into the mountains.
In town, Canmore has over 80 km of multi-use trails, which is a big part of why it’s such a popular pet-friendly travel destination.
The Bow River Loop, Policeman’s Creek Boardwalk Trail, and Grassi Lakes Interpretive Trail are all perfect for enjoying Canmore’s natural beauty while getting your dog some exercise.

Your Pet-Friendly Winter Vacation Itinerary
What can your pet-friendly day in Canmore actually look like this winter? That’s entirely up to you, of course, but we have some suggestions.
Morning
Wake up at the Coast Canmore Hotel & Conference Centre and grab breakfast at TABLE Food + Drink. The morning menu has everything from Yogurt Parfait and Avocado Toast to Shakshuka and elevated favourites like the Duck & Waffle.
After you’ve filled up, take a quick 20-minute walk to the Elk Run Dog Park with your pup. There, you can let them off their leash to run and play with other dogs.
From there, head downtown and grab coffee. If the weather is warm enough, Canmore locals love to sit on the patios throughout winter, so grab a snack, coffee or tea from a local cafe like Communitea.
Afternoon
Now that the sun’s up and it’s gotten warmer, it’s time to head out onto one of Canmore’s trails for a longer walk with a gorgeous view of the mountains. For the adventurous, the area around Canmore is a destination for hikers and snowshoers. Still, in-town hikes like the Policeman’s Creek Trail will get you all the fresh air and exercise you need.
Afterward, do some shopping downtown. Stores like Alberta’s Own Marketplace are dog-friendly and stocked with locally-made products. Be sure to stop by the Mut Hut to pick up some treats for your pup, too.
Evening
Maybe your dog needs another trip to an off-leash area, or maybe the best idea is to stop by one of Canmore’s craft breweries. Many of these have dog-friendly patios that stay open whenever the temperatures aren’t too frigid.
You could grab dinner at one of the breweries or head back to the hotel for another meal at TABLE Food + Drink. Then, you can relax in your room while your dog rests in a cozy pet bed after a long day.
