Sechelt Inlet

The Sechelt Inlet is a paddler’s paradise. Known for its calm waters and stunning scenery, it’s perfect for paddlers of all skill levels. There are many areas along the Inlet where you can launch your kayak or paddle board to begin your paddling adventure, but the closest launch area is just a 7-minute drive north of the hotel at Halfmoon Sea Kayaks. Halfmoon Sea Kayaks is a great place to rent sea kayaks, paddle boards or canoes. They offer guided day and multi-day tours for those who want a bit more adventure.

If you’re looking for somewhere else to launch your paddling adventure, Lamb Bay is another great launching point for paddling around the Inlet and is just a 17-minute drive north from the hotel. Its accessibility, sandy shore, and wind protection are all great reasons to start your paddling adventure here. Once you’re in the water, paddle out of Lamb Bay and head right (north) to continue following the coastline. There are several small islands in this area and provides great viewing for small marine life such as starfish, crabs, jellyfish, seabirds, and eagles.

The high surrounding mountains of the Inlet protect you from wind and waves that are common on the open ocean, providing you with perfect paddling conditions. Mornings and evenings are typically the most calm and peaceful with lush green mountains and tranquil blue waters. As you glide through the water, you'll be surrounded by stunning nature views. Make sure you keep an eye out for wildlife as seals, otters, and eagles are common sights. And if you’re lucky, you may just spot whales or dolphins.

Porpoise Bay Provincial Park

Porpoise Bay Provincial Park is an excellent starting point for your paddling adventure and is located an 11-minute drive north of the hotel. There are a couple of nearby options for rentals including Halfmoon Sea Kayaks or Pedals and Paddles. Both places offer kayak, paddle board and canoe rentals and also offer guided tours. All the safety gear required by the Canadian Coast Guard and Transport Canada is outfitted with every rental at both rental locations. This includes a main paddle, spare paddle, spray skirt (for kayaks), life jacket, whistle, throw bag, pump, sponge and a map.
The bay, located at the southern end of Sechelt Inlet, offers sheltered waters ideal for beginners. You can explore sandy beaches, mountain views, and second-growth forests, or venture into the larger inlet if you're feeling adventurous. The park serves as a great base camp for paddlers exploring the bay and Sechelt Inlet. It's a family favorite and perfect for kids to try kayaking, canoeing, or paddleboarding. Keep your eyes peeled for marine life such as seals, eagles, otters and if you’re really lucky, you may just spot whales or dolphins!

Davis Bay Beach

Davis Bay Beach is located right on the ocean and is directly across from the hotel providing quick access for your paddling adventure. This paddling spot is for more experienced paddlers since it’s on the open ocean and isn’t protected from the wind and waves like the Inlet and Porpoise Bay Provincial Park are. Enjoy views of Vancouver Island in the distance, stunning coastal views, and potential marine life sightings! Just like the other locations, keep an eye out for seals, otters, eagles and sea lions! Whale sightings are not uncommon along the shores of the Sunshine Coast, so make sure you’re on the lookout for orcas, humpbacks or dolphins.

Alpha Adventures is the closest rental company to our hotel in Davis Bay and offers kayaks, canoes, and paddle boards. Launch off from across the street and visit the resident harbor seals at Kunechin Point or paddle across Welcome Passage to Thormanby Islands in the Georgia Strait. Be sure to stop by Buccaneer Bay Provincial Park, a stunning white sand beach between North and South Thormanby Islands.

Tips for a Great Paddling Experience

Always check the weather before heading out so you can dress and pack accordingly. Coastal weather can be unpredictable, so it’s important to stay up-to-date on any changing conditions. Wear a life jacket and carry essential safety equipment such as a whistle, flashlight, phone, map etc. It's also wise to let someone know your plans and expected return time. Bring plenty of water, wear sunglasses and a hat, and use sunscreen. Always keep a safe distance from wildlife and refrain from disturbing their natural habitats.
