Protection Island

Protection Island is primarily a residential area accessible to visitors via a daily passenger ferry. A scenic 4km loop trail around the island lets you explore coastal beaches, parks, and historical sites. Despite its small size, Protection Island has a fascinating history, including a former coal mine that operated until 1938. You can also enjoy Canada's only floating pub here, which offers fantastic views of the Nanaimo skyline.
